THE BOSTON 500 GETS BOSTONIANS RACING TO LOWER THEIR ENERGY BILLS

By October 21, 2019 No Comments

Job. Family. Dinner. Errands. You might not have the time to worry about your energy use, or the biggest part of your carbon footprint.

But what if you had a friend who was also an energy expert? What if he told you everything you needed to know to stop losing so much money on your bills? And then, after all that, he gave you thermostats and power strips and replaced your light bulbs? And what if no money came out of your pocket for all that help?

Well, this week’s Boston 500: Challenge to Save Energy was a citywide chain of events that kickstarted our outreach to show you just that.  From Mattapan to East Boston, Charlestown to West Roxbury, people from all over Boston participated in drum circles, house parties, and road races – all to get others to sign up for a no-cost energy assessment from an energy expert.

And from the event’s start date of Saturday, June 1st through Friday, June 7th, we succeeded in having 500 people sign up to have a friendly expert tell them about their energy use to learn about their electricity, water, and heating bills, too!

This is (in our humble opinion) a really neat way to get people to get involved and is what Greenovate Boston is all about. There’s nothing like the power of community to spread the word on making Boston a more sustainable place. We know that people are most affected friends, families, and neighbors. We’re lucky that it turns out that anyone in Boston can be that friend, family member, or neighbor!

Oh, and as an added bonus, on Saturday, the City announced a game-changing whole building incentive through the City of Boston’s Renew Boston program, which will allow huge discounts on weatherizing and insulating your entire house, not just one apartment in it.

Weatherizing is the best, cheapest, and quickest way to reducing your carbon footprint drastically, and it’s not too late for you to sign up for your own home assessment.  Sign-up, and don’t forget spread the word!
