YOUTH CAN! YOUTH ARE! This chant, led by Tem Blessed, a climate justice hip hop artist from New Bedford, MA and 200 youth from across New England, echoed throughout the MIT stata center at the 9th annual Youth Climate Action Summit last weekend. Tem kicked off the summit with his incredible music – relaying important messages about climate justice, human rights, environmental protection and the fact that all across the globe, YOUTH ARE taking action on climate change issues!
Each year Boston Latin School YouthCAN (an afterschool environmental club) organizes an educational and action oriented Summit where young climate leaders gather to hone their skills, identify ways to collaborate, share best practices, celebrate successes and take collective action on a sustainability topic. The 2015 Summit was another great success thanks to organizing partners – Boston Latin School YouthCAN, Alliance for Climate Education, Acton Boxborough Regional School District, Boston Green Schools and the Technology & Culture Forum at MIT.
Attendees heard from inspiring environmental leaders, took part in solution workshops – ranging in topics from creating an environmental PSA to carbon taxes, engaged with dozens of community partners who were exhibiting, shared their creative talents at the mural and craft tables, and learned about leadership, event and volunteer opportunities to expand their climate action back in their school and community.
These students are dedicated Bostonians who care about ensuring our City will thrive economically and be a beautiful and sustainable place to live well into the future.
