The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center will develop and host an exhibition to show how climate has been documented in maps throughout history. The exhibition will be titled Regions and Seasons: Mapping Climate through History.
The exhibition will provide historical context of climate from the 15th century to today. Visitors will explore and compare the gradual sophistication of mapping data to better analyze the impact of changing climatic conditions. A segment of the exhibit will display Boston-focused maps of climate readiness and city resilience. These maps will include the depiction of Boston prior to the Back Bay land reclamation project in the 1850s and show the fill areas over time. The exhibit will include at least five maps, accompanied by graphs and statistics, on the future of Boston as it relates to resiliency in response to sea-level rise and flooding. The primary source for this segment will be the work from Climate Ready Boston. The exhibit will include an interactive touchscreen with additional maps and data.
In addition to Library and Map Center visitors, the Center will host school visits and a speaker series on cartography, history, and climate. The exhibition will also be permanently available online as a virtual tour, as well as offer resources for teachers and other educational materials.
