Three more Boston organizations will participate in the Greenovate Boston Mayor’s Carbon Cup, Mayor Marty Walsh announced today at a meeting of the Green Ribbon Commission. AvalonBay Communities, Sheraton Boston Hotel, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals have thrown their hats into the ring to join seven other local institutions in committing to major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
The Mayor’s Carbon Cup began in April 2014, and recognizes the emissions reduction commitments of large organizations. Participants must enroll at least 1 million square feet and commit to a 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
“Boston is committed to being a leader in our efforts to address climate change, and those efforts would be impossible without these significant commitments from community partners,” Mayor Walsh said.
Participants use the emissions reporting framework established by the Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO). Through BERDO, the City will track the year-to-year progress towards each participant’s goal.
The Mayor’s Carbon Cup emphasizes how important large institutions are to the city’s emissions reduction goals. Mayor Walsh’s Climate Action Plan is the City of Boston’s roadmap for achieving a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Success will require the commitment of all Bostonians, and large building portfolios will need to lead by aiming for higher emissions reduction targets.
AvalonBay, Sheraton, and Vertex represent the first Carbon Cup participants from the residential real estate, hotel, and biotech sectors, respectively.
