CLIMATE-SMART CITIES WEBINAR RECAP

By October 24, 2019 No Comments

Yesterday, Greenovate teamed up with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) to host a webinar about TPL’s Climate-Smart Cities visualization tool.

Many of you tuned in to learn more about the Climate-Smart Cities visualization tool, and the different ways to apply this tool to your work. Chris David, the GIS Program Manager for the Climate-Smart Cities tool at the Trust for Public Land, walked viewers through the tool’s functionality, and used hypothetical examples to demonstrate the tool’s features and filter capabilities. At the end of the webinar, Chris and his team answered many questions from viewers. Read below the top 3 questions and answers below.

Question and Answers

  • Question: Where does the data come from for the tree canopy?
    • Answer: We are using a LCD  in this case, that was for a variety of reasons, but what we can say is that as part of this project we are working with the University of Vermont to create new up to date tree canopy cover based on 2015 LiDAR information that gets really detailed for both Boston and the whole Metro Mayor’s region, so 14 other cities and towns around the City.  We will be incorporating this into the tool later this year. The data has just been transferred to us in the last week or so. We’re really excited to use the high resolution data to help us so much more with decision making.
  • Question: Are these maps built in Tableau?
    • Answer: No we use the ArcGIS platform on Esri to all of our analysis and to build our maps. We do provide all of the final results to the City for their use, and they may be able to convert them into Tableau. We do not actually work at the Trust for Public Land in Tableau at this time.
  • Question: Does the parcel report identify the specific parcel property owner?
    • Answer: Yes, you are able to use this tool to understand who you need to contact and try to schedule those meetings and make the case for green infrastructure in those areas.
