By October 30, 2019 No Comments

With spring just around the corner, the 42nd Annual Gardeners’ Gathering, presented by Trustees and the City of Boston, will take place on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 11AM-5PM at Northeastern University’s Shillman Hall. Mayor Marty Walsh will, once again, attend and present the Annual Community Garden Awards. Free and open to all, the Gardener’s Gathering brings together nearly 500 gardeners every spring to network and learn. Workshops will cover everything from permaculture, composting and fermentation to organizing a garden and gardening with youth.  Boston-area agriculture, gardening, and environmental organizations will share their work through workshops and an exhibitor’s gallery.

The opening plenary will feature Mayor Marty Walsh and special guest speaker, food justice activist LaDonna Redmond.  Mayor Walsh’s keynote address will be followed by his presentation of the 15th Annual Community Garden Awards. Outstanding community gardens and individual gardeners will be honored for their contributions to the Boston gardening community with the “Hall of Fame Garden,” “Rookie Garden of the Year,” and “Most Valuable Gardener” awards.

LaDonna Redmond will address be “Food and Justice: feeding ourselves in uncertain times” during the noon plenary and during the workshop sessions, she will participate in a roundtable discussion focused on ending oppression in our food system and beyond. Redmond is an activist and visionary recognized by Time magazine and many national food organizations such as the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, as having been instrumental in improving food access for residents of both Chicago and communities across the nation. She also founded the Campaign for Food Justice Now, which draws attention to the relationship between the food movement and broader social issues including race, gender, and class.
